Another World

In another world, Alice was flying above waters. She had been flying for days? Weeks?  Years? Light years? Alice failed to remember but once she asked herself this very question, exhaustion came and land was no where to be seen.

In her distraught, Alice met another companion. He was handsome and charming. She was temporary distracted and suddenly, the flight seemed tolerable even enjoyable now that she was not alone.

Love was in the air.

Then Alice saw her family, friends and strangers who became friends. Together, they flew on like a community. Alice was happy with the extended circle but felt unrest. The constant flying was never-ending but strangely only Alice was aware, no one else seemed to notice. She tried telling someone about the search for land but it was like telling it to a fish.

All they wanted to talk about was raising a bigger family, who should be the next leader, who should be prosecuted, sex and shit.

Depressed, Alice felt more exhausted than ever.

“How much longer must I fly on? It’s getting stupid”, thought Alice.

Her mother flew next to her and said, “When are you getting married? You’re not getting any younger”.

But my arms are getting really tired, don’t you guys feel it”? Alice replied with a question.

“We’ll get married next year”. Alice’s lover joined in.

“Should be sooner than later, I want a grand-child, just one”. Said Alice’s lover’s mother.

“We’ll get married when we feel it’s right, which may be tomorrow or never".

Alice’s last remark made everyone unhappy and they let her be.

A glowing figure flew near her and Alice heard a familiar voice, “Why are you so sad”?

“Because I am flawed and I don’t understand things quick enough to avoid the sadness”, said Alice.

“What do you want”? the voice continued; it was getting so familiar that Alice could almost recognize it.

“Land. So I can rest and stop flying all the time. So I can think clearly without having to fly all the time. So I can understand and let go”. Alice replied indifferently and looked up to the figure.

She remembered.

The voice belonged to her dad.

“Ba, what are you doing here? You’re dead”. Alice asked.

“You tell me”. Alice’s dad lit up a cigarette.

“Because you’re my unsettled business”. Alice lit up a spliff.

“So this flying….will it end”? She asked.

“It’s a loop but there’s a way out”. He winked.

“Can you show me”?

“This one yes. The next one you’re on your own”. Alice’s dead father then grabbed her by the arm and they dived into the waters.

The waters filled up her lungs.

Moments later, she was dead.
